🚫 HB 1698 — Texas bans phones in school, all day, statewide

They Took Your Kid's Phone.
We Gave You a Better Way.

Texas law means your child's phone is locked away for 7 hours a day. No emergency check-in. No schedule change. Nothing. StudentMsg fixes it — your student emails from their school iPad, you get a text in seconds. Both parents. No app. $8/month.

The law was meant to help students focus.
It left parents completely in the dark.

📵
HB 1698 passed — personal phones banned all day, statewide Texas became one of the first states to mandate phone-free schools. Every major district followed immediately: Southlake Carroll, Highland Park, Eanes, Coppell, Plano, Frisco, and 600+ more.
😰
Parents lost their only line of communication overnight No "I'm running late" text. No emergency check-in. No quick plan change before 3pm pickup. For 7 hours a day, your child was completely unreachable — and you had to just hope everything was fine.
📞
"Call the front office" is not a real solution in 2025 Schools have 800–2,000 students and two front desk staff. Calling to relay "practice moved to 4pm" ties up the office, stresses the staff, and takes 20 minutes. For everyone. Every time.
StudentMsg was built for exactly this problem School iPads and Chromebooks still have email. We route that email to your phone as a text — instantly. Your student emails, you text back, they get your reply as email on their iPad. Done.

"My daughter was sick and I didn't know for two hours. The office called once — I missed it, no voicemail left. She had her school iPad the whole time. She had email. She just had no way to reach me with it."

— Parent of a Carroll ISD student, Southlake TX · This is why we built StudentMsg.

Advanced features

Smart Routing — Control Who Gets Each Message

Simple text commands. No app to update. Works from any phone or school email, exactly as-is.

📱 Student → one parent only
Emma’s school iPad — she types:
Dad: My stomach really hurts. Do I need to go to the nurse?
↩ StudentMsg sees “Dad:” — routes to Dad only

📲 Dad’s phone — gets it instantly:
Emma: My stomach really hurts. Do I need to go to the nurse?
You’ll be fine. Eat something if you haven’t. Text me if it gets worse.
📲 Mom’s phone:
⊘ Not notified — Emma said “Dad:” only

Emma decided this was a Dad question. Mom’s phone stays quiet.

📲 Parent → student only, no fan-out
Dad’s phone — he texts:
Emma only: I got off work early — meet me at the front at 2:30.
↩ StudentMsg sees “Emma only:” — emails Emma, no SMS fan-out

📱 Emma’s iPad — gets it:
Dad: I got off work early — meet me at the front at 2:30.
📲 Mom’s phone:
⊘ Not notified — Dad used “Emma only:”

When Mom is busy or you don’t want to interrupt her, use Emma only: and she’s not bothered.

💻 Commands at a glance
From Emma’s school email (student → parents):
Dad: message — only Dad gets SMS
Mom: message — only Mom gets SMS
All: message — everyone (same as no prefix)
(no prefix) — all contacts get SMS
help: — get this list by email
From parents’ phones (parent → student):
(just text) — Emma gets email, both parents notified
Emma only: msg — Emma gets email, other parent NOT notified
Emma: msg — routes to Emma’s account (multiple students)
help — get this list by SMS

All commands work in any capitalization. Type help anytime and StudentMsg will text or email the full command list.

What Texas Parents Are Saying

From Southlake to University Park to Westlake Hills — busy parents across Texas's most connected communities rely on StudentMsg every school day.

★★★★★
I work in downtown Dallas and drop my daughter off in Southlake every morning. Before StudentMsg, if her after-school plans changed I wouldn't find out until I was already in the parking lot. Now she emails from her school iPad and I get a text the second she hits send. Total game-changer.

★★★★★
My son goes to Highland Park and I travel for work constantly. When the school banned phones I genuinely didn't know how parents were supposed to manage. StudentMsg solved it perfectly — he emails, I get a text wherever in the world I am. My wife gets it too. We both always know he's okay.
👨
Michael R.
University Park parent · Highland Park ISD
★★★★★
Three kids — one at Eanes, two in Frisco — all on one account. Every message shows their name so I always know who it is. For $8 a month this is genuinely the best money I spend. I honestly don't know how other parents manage the phone ban without this.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my student need to install anything?

No. Your student sends a regular email from their school iPad or Chromebook to their StudentMsg address. No app, no account, no passwords to remember. If they can use school email, they can use StudentMsg.

What Texas school districts does StudentMsg support?

StudentMsg works with any Texas school that provides students with access to school email on iPads or Chromebooks — including Dallas ISD, Houston ISD, Austin ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Plano ISD, Frisco ISD, McKinney ISD, Katy ISD, Conroe ISD, and 600+ more. If the school issues devices with email access, StudentMsg works.

Do I need a special app to receive texts?

No. Messages arrive as regular SMS texts to your phone. You reply by text. Nothing extra needed on your end — it works on any phone, any carrier.

Can both parents receive the texts?

Yes. Add as many parent phone numbers as you like. When your student emails, every contact on your list receives the text simultaneously. You can also set up separate accounts if divorced parents want private conversations.

What's the difference between Standard and Private plans?

On the Standard plan, messages route through our system number to your account — completely privately, isolated from other families. On the Private plan ($10/month), you get your own dedicated phone number that parents can save in their contacts. Functionality is identical; the difference is whether parents see a dedicated number they recognize.

Is this against school rules?

StudentMsg routes through the school's email system (iPad/Chromebook), which schools typically permit for academic use. We are not a phone and do not circumvent phone ban policies. That said, each district is different — check your district's acceptable use policy if unsure.

What if I have multiple kids?

Add each additional student to your plan for $2/month per student. Each child gets their own StudentMsg address. Every message is labeled with the student's name in the text, so you always know who's reaching out.

How is my student's privacy protected?

Only their registered school email address can contact their StudentMsg inbox. Messages are deleted from our servers within 24 hours. We never share any information with third parties and never send marketing to students.

How fast does it work?

Typically under 10 seconds from when your student hits Send on the iPad to when you get the text. We poll for new emails every 60 seconds and immediately forward anything that matches your student's address.

Can I try it before committing?
